Nepal Human Rights Day 2010

Call for rights-friendly statute

HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE
KATHMANDU: Human rights activists today urged the political parties and Constituent Assembly members to deliver a human rights-friendly constitution on time.

Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Human Rights National Magna Meet 2010, they underlined the need to incorporate social, economic and political rights in the new constitution with a special focus on the rights of the marginalised and downtrodden people.

The meeting, which kicked off in Basantapur on the eve of the World Human Rights Day, will assess progress made on the human rights front in the past one year and make commitments for the next year, according to Daman Nath Dhungana, a rights activist.

Addressing the meeting as the chief guest, Chief Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission Kedarnath Upadhyaya expressed worries over delays in the constitution-writing process and the political parties’ preoccupation with power.

Rights activist Birendra Prasad Mishra said it is the right of the Nepalis to get the new constitution on time, while another activist Malla K Sundar said human rights are in peril as the political parties have shut the Parliament, the platform through which elected representatives speak on behalf of the people.

He went on to accuse some human rights organisations of working as a political front instead of upholding the spirit of human rights. Addressing the programme, Anthony Cardon, officer in-charge of the OHCHR-Nepal, opined that the new constitution is crucial for the protection and promotion of human rights. Women’s rights activist Renu Raj Bhandari condemned the mounting violence against women, and appealed to all activists to press political leaders, who are on foreign junkets keeping all important tasks aside, to be accountable to the people. Chairman of the National Dalit Commission Bijul Kumar Biswakarma said the commission had forwarded two bills in the Parliament for the protection of Dalits. He accused the political parties of paying no heed to the commission’s demands.

Representatives from around 100 national and international rights organisations are attending the meeting.
