KATHMANDU: Nepal’s international development partners today presented a strategy paper to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and political parties with a pledge to support Nepal’s peace process and its development activities.

The paper titled ‘Peace and Development Strategy’ is a joint work of a cross-section of local and international actors, including UN agencies, bilateral aid agencies, international financial institutions, NGOs and think tanks.

Issuing a press release on behalf of the group, the UN House in Nepal said the strategy is the development partners’ ‘offer of support’ in specific areas that could help Nepal build irreversible peace and work on the development agenda embedded in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The strategy highlights short as well as long-term priorities relating to peace and transition issues. It also includes a supplement action plan comprising 178 specific areas currently receiving support and potential areas of support. However, all actions listed are contingent on government requests. The action plan will help establish a state of readiness for development partners, according to the statement.

“Nepal’s development partners are ready to further support the peace building process. As development actors, we recognise the importance of the CPA’s emphasis on long-term transformation, in addition to short-term political measures. We are ready, when Nepal is ready, to accelerate work on this ambitious agenda in an even more concerted fashion,” the statement read quoting Robert Piper, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nepal.
